Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Peter Tan Van Le:
Father Peter Tan Van Le was ordained a priest in 1973, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Charlotte. According to media reports, in 2013, he was accused of sexually abusing multiple minors at St. Joseph Vietnamese Catholic Church in Charlotte. A subsequent law enforcement investigation identified even more victims.
Authorities did not prosecute Father Le, but the Diocese’s Lay Review Board found the allegations against him credible. In August of 2013, the diocese removed Le’s priestly faculties and alerted his home diocese of Vinh Long, Vietnam, where he had retired in 2011 because of ill health.
Le was officially removed from ministry in 2013. He is believed to be residing in Vietnam.
According to media reports, in December 2019, Le’s name was included on the Diocese of Charlotte’s list of 14 clergy members who have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse in western North Carolina since the diocese was established in 1972.
