Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Raymond Hyland:

Fr. Raymond Hyland was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of New York in 1947. In the mid-1980s, a woman reportedly told the Archdiocese of New York that Fr. Hyland sexually abused her when she was a child in the Bronx in the 1950s. The woman, now an Ursuline nun, claims that Fr. Hyland stepped in to “take her under his wing” after her sister was struck and killed by a car. She said he would take her and two other sisters to plays, the circus, and keep them busy. The abuse allegedly started when the woman was 11 years old and continued until she was 16.

The victim stated that two priests from the Archdiocese questioned her about the allegations and asked what she hoped to get out of this now. She asked for compensation to help with her therapy expenses, which wasn’t granted until 2000 when the Archdiocese sent a check to her order.

Further, the victim said that she was made to sign a confidentiality agreement if she accepted the money. She began to speak out in 2005, and in 2016, the survivor publicly accused Fr. Hyland of sexually abusing her in the 1950s. Fr. Hyland was named on the Archdiocese of New York’s 2019 List of Archdiocesan Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or the Subject of Eligible IRCP Compensation Claims. His status as a priest, whereabouts, and whether he had access to children from 1994 until his death in 1995, are unknown.
