Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother Rene Gallant:
Br. Rene Gallant, known as “Br. Charlie”, was accused of sexual abuse from at least 28 individuals.
According to media reports, claims were included in Jesuit’s $166M settlement in 2011 with over 500 plaintiffs. Gallant was named as among the ten most prolific abusers in the settlement.
During the 2011 civil suit against the Ursuline Order and Helena Diocese, there were several plaintiffs that alleged abuse by Gallant when he was assigned to St. Ignatius Mission (he was assigned to St. Ignatius Mission from 1940-1975) and that they were abused on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The civil suit was filed by 45 individuals against 4 nuns, 6 priests, and 1 religious brother. Most of his victims were physically, sexually, and emotionally abused.
In 2015, Gallant was included on the Diocese of Helena List in compliance with the non-monetary terms of the 2015 bankruptcy settlement.
In 2018, Gallant was also included on the Jesuits West Province list named as being credibly accused of child sex abuse. It notes multiple allegations of abuse reported in 2009 spanning 3 decades: 1943-46; 1946-50; 1952; 1954-55; 1955-60; 1957; 1959-61; 1960-62; 1963-65; 1964-65; 1964-71; 1967-68; 1968-70.
Gallant died in 1975.
