Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Paul Butler:

On July 17, 2021, the Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that Fr. Paul Butler, a priest assigned to St. Margaret of Scotland parish in Seldon, voluntarily resigned his position following an allegation of child sexual abuse.

The Diocese released very little information about the allegation except to say that it was made in a lawsuit filed by the alleged victim, who says that the abuse occurred in the 1980s when Butler was a seminarian.

The Diocese says that Butler’s faculties will be suspended pending its internal investigation.

The boy, who was 12 or 13 at the time, was a student at the Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, New York, which merged with another school to become Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School. The alleged abuse included fondling and groping the child’s genitals.

Since the allegations involve a current diocesan bishop, the Diocese of Rockville Center, which includes Saints Cyril, reportedly notified the Vatican of the lawsuit, as well as to the Suffolk County District Attorney.
