Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Sister Bridgette:
In 2003, a woman filed a lawsuit against the San Diego diocese, University High School and the Nazareth House Orphanage. The plaintiff was brought to the orphanage by her widowed mother, who could no longer support the family. During the four years she lived there, the suit claims she was abused, beaten and tortured by a nun named Sister Bridgette. The lawsuit describes a windowless room known as “solitary confinement,” where the victim and other children were sent if they were found guilty of any wrongdoing.
It also alleges that Sister Bridgette sexually molested the woman during the 1971-1972 school year. Msgr. Brent Eagan was also included in the same lawsuit and was accused of raping the girl in the summer of 1972. Rev. Robert Buchanan, who is no longer in the ministry, and Richard Gordon, whose whereabouts are unknown, were also named in the lawsuit for alleged abuse against the victim. The lawsuit was settled in 2004, and both Sister Bridgette and Msgr. Eagen have been listed as deceased.
The complainant filed a suit again in 2006, when the San Diego diocese stopped paying for her therapy after only one year. This situation has happened to many other victims who have received compensation through therapy, and have had their sessions terminated after only one year.
