Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Stephen Kain:

Fr. Stephen Kain was a Franciscan priest ordained in 1974. According to media reports, in 2004, he was named in a civil lawsuit alleging he sexually assaulted a student while he served at St. Anthony’s Seminary High School in Santa Barbara, California during the 1980s. He was removed from ministry in 1993.

In 2001, an allegation was reported that Fr. Kain sexually abused another minor while serving at St. William’s in Los Altos, California. One priest testified that despite multiple Franciscan’s knowledge of his history of child sexual abuse before the incident at St. William’s, his parishioners were never warned. Following the allegations, Kain was transferred to St. Boniface in San Francisco, California. In 2006, he was named in a lawsuit that included another priest and it was settled for more than $28 million. In the Fall of 2009, two more civil suits were filed alleging child sexual abuse by Kain. 

In 2019, his name appeared on the Franciscans’ Santa Barbara Province list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted allegations reported in 1993, 2004, 2006, and 2008 of child sex abuse from 1981-1987. It also noted Kain was removed from ministry in 1993, living under restrictions. In 2019, his name also appeared on the Diocese of Oakland’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It is believed Kain is currently serving at San Damiano Retreat in Danville, CA.

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Stephen Kain:

Fr. Stephen Kain of the Franciscan Friars was named in a 2004 civil lawsuit that claims he assaulted at least one student while he worked at St. Anthony’s Seminary High School in Santa Barbara, CA, during the mid-1980s. The details of the sexual abuse allegations, including the victim’s age and gender, are unknown.

In 2001, a report was made that claimed Fr. Kain sexually abused another minor while working at St. William’s in Los Altos, CA. Another priest testified that even though multiple Franciscans knew about Fr. Kain’s history of child sexual abuse before St. William’s, nothing was ever done about it, and there were never any warnings to Fr. Kain’s parishioners.

As a result of the allegations of child sexual abuse, Fr. Kain was transferred to St. Boniface in San Francisco. He was eventually removed from ministry in 1993.

Fr. Kain is named publicly on the Franciscans’ Santa Barbara Province 2019 list of Franciscan Friars from the St. Barbara Province with Credibly (sic) Claims of Sexual Abuse of a Minor, and on the Oakland Diocese’s 2019 list of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. According to the lists, reports were made in 1993, 2004, 2006, and 2008 that Fr. Kain allegedly sexually abused minors from approximately 1981 to 1987. This list also states that Fr. Kain is currently living at an Elder Care Facility in California.
