Have you been sexually abused by a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Syracuse?  We can help.

If you have been sexually abused by a priest – or anyone else working in the Diocese of Syracuse – you may have a limited time to seek justice due to the recent passage of the Child Victims Act.  Horowitz Law is now evaluating legal claims for anyone sexually abused by a priest, brother, nun, teacher, coach, or other lay employee of the Diocese of Syracuse. Contact us today at (888) 283-9922 or at adam@adamhorowitzlaw.com to learn more.

In June 2020, the Diocese of Syracuse filed for federal bankruptcy protection.  As part of its bankruptcy, the Diocese of Syracuse will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees.  This will likely include claims filed on behalf of anyone whose case may be beyond the statute of limitations.  Strict filing deadlines will apply once they are set by the bankruptcy court, and if you fail to take action before that date, you may never be allowed to take action against the Diocese of Syracuse again, even if the statute of limitations changes.  So please contact us today.

Our lawyers are among the most experienced in the country in cases of clergy sexual abuse – and experience matters when bishops have the toughest lawyers in America working hard to protect their secrets.

Sexual abuse by any member of the clergy is an egregious breach of trust.   Adam Horowitz is among the most experienced attorneys in the country in representing persons sexually abused by priests from the Catholic church and clergy of many other faiths.  Since 2000, the lawyers of Horowitz Law have handled hundreds of clergy sexual abuse cases involving various religious institutions, including Roman Catholic dioceses and religious orders nationwide. These cases have arisen in religious school, churches/parishes, seminaries, religious counseling, retreats, schools and other activities sponsored by religious institutions.

In these cases, the lawyers of Horowitz Law have often prevailed on complex issues involving statutes of limitations, the First Amendment, and the discovery of “confidential” records that the Catholic Church has tried to conceal for nearly a century in some cases.  In fighting these battles, our attorneys have became very familiar with the church’s unique hierarchy, record-keeping policies, terminology, and defense tactics, and are often called upon by colleagues to consult on these matters.

Most importantly, we have become familiar with the unique challenges and needs of survivors of clergy sexual abuse – and their families – during the legal process.  Your safety and well-being are always our first priority.

The Diocese of Syracuse has filed for bankruptcy protection, and anyone sexually abused in the Syracuse Diocese who has not already settled his or her case is entitled to file a claim.  More than likely  this will also include those sexually assaulted as adults and the estates of deceased victims.

The Diocese of Syracuse is the latest of several dozen dioceses and religious orders to file for bankruptcy protection due to the number of sexual abuse claims filed against it.  Bankruptcy creates a way for the dioceses to control the financial impact of the cases against it by creating a “bar date” set by the bankruptcy court.  Anyone who may have a claim against the Diocese of Syracuse, which usually includes anyone sexually abused as a minor child by a priest or employee of the Diocese, will have the opportunity to submit a claim and ask for compensation from the Court. If you do not file a claim before the “bar date” set by the Court, you will likely never be able to take action against the Diocese of Syracuse in the future, even if New York law would otherwise allow you to do so.

A strict deadline will apply to the filing of all claims, so it is important that you act soon to protect your rights under the fund.  Contact us today.
