Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Joseph Maffei:
Fr. Joseph Maffei, of the Salesians of Don Bosco, was a native of Italy who came to the United States in 1952. He worked in minor seminaries, retreat houses for youth, and parishes in Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and, for several years, in Montreal, Quebec.
According to the lawsuit, in 2013, Maffei was accused in a lawsuit of having repeatedly sexually abused a 12-year-old boy at the Marian Shrine in New Rochelle, New York, in 1978. His accuser also claimed abuse by Maffei’s two other Salesians. The case was settled in September 2013. Maffei is included on the 2020 Salesians list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.
Maffei died in 2009.
