Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother Martin Gates:

Br. Martin “Marty” Gates was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1963, who served in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He taught Spanish at Saint Anthony’s in Santa Barbara, and then became pastor at Sacred Heart in Phoenix, a small church in one of the city’s most disadvantaged
neighborhoods. According to media reports, in 2019, his name was included on the Santa Barbara Franciscans’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted allegations of child sexual abuse from 1970 to 1979, reported in 1993 and 1995. The abuse occurred while he served at Sacred Heart, in Phoenix.

Br. Gates’ name was included on the Diocese of Phoenix’s list of clergy credibly accused of child, as well as on the Diocese of Stockton Revised List in November 2020.

Br. Gates died in 2000.
