On June 11th, 2014, The Congregation of Christian Brothers released a list of brothers who had been credibly accused of at least two sexual abuse claims. One brother who was publicly listed for the first time was Clement A. Murphy. The order did not release any details about the victims or the timeframe of the alleged abuse.

At least one survivor has alleged child sexual abuse by Brother Murphy in the late 1970s at Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady, New York in the Diocese of Albany.

In 2019, a lawsuit was filed in which claims abuse by Murphy between 1964-1867 of a girl, ages 7-10, in the Albany diocese, when Murphy was administrator of a Schenectady parish and school.

Clement Murphy reportedly died before the list was published.

The Christian Brothers have also failed to provide any full assignment information of the accused brothers during their time with the order. They have stated that the merits of most of the claims settled in bankruptcy were not tested. According to bishopaccountability.org, Clement A. Murphy was able to be placed in the Archdiocese of Chicago as well.

In 2019, Murphy’s name appeared publicly on the Diocese of Albany’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.
