Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Daniel J. Maher: According to media reports, in May 2005, an Albany man reported allegations of sexual abuse against Father Daniel J. Maher. The alleged victim claimed that Father Daniel J. Maher raped him twice in 1973, during weekend trips to a Saratoga Lake camp. He was a twelve year old altar boy when the alleged incidents took place at St. Frances de Sales church in West Albany. Father Maher denied the allegations. Later that year in September, the victim’s attorney said that a second victim had come forward and filed a $2 million lawsuit against the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese. Father Maher was exonerated by the Diocese of Albany’s Sexual Misconduct Review Board which found that there was "no reasonable cause" to believe the allegations brought against Father Maher. He was returned to duty and remains a priest in good standing.
