Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Edward Igle:
Father Edward Igle assisted at parishes in the Diocese of Camden and was Clinical Director of Catholic Social Services. He was accused in a 1994 lawsuit of having sexually assaulted and raped a boy in the 1970s when the boy was 14-17 years old.
The abuse was said to have taken place at St. Cecilia’s in Pennsauken and at a Blackwood parish. The claim was later settled by the Diocese of Camden. Despite the settlement, Igle was allowed to stay in ministry.
Igle denies the abuse and said in May 2000 that he was going on a voluntary leave of absence; however, the Diocese of Camden said he was removed because of the sexual abuse allegations.
A second man received a settlement in the early 2000s after alleging sexual abuse by Igle in the 1970s at a Deptford parish.
Igle Begins New Career as a Therapist
After the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden removed Edward Igle from active ministry in 2000 over an allegation of sex abuse, he turned to his second career: family counseling.
Licensed as a therapist since the 1980s, the suspended priest runs a South Jersey practice, counseling families and children, and teaches related classes through a Philadelphia-based center, including on how to identify and clinically treat victims of sex abuse.
In 2011, church officials told New Jersey regulators about two men who claimed that Igle abused them in the 1970s. The diocese deemed both claims credible but too late under the statute of limitations to lead to prosecution.
Igle’s name appears on the February 2019 Diocese of Camden list of credibly accused priests. According to Bishop Sullivan, the list, “includes those who admitted to the abuse, those who were found guilty after a trial in the church courts or the civil courts, and others against whom the evidence was so overwhelming as to be virtually unquestionable.”
While Igle no longer holds a current license to practice in the State of New Jersey, he does have an active license as a marriage and family therapist in Delaware.
