According to media reports, Father John Hewetson was St. Joseph’s first pastor. He worked in various parishes throughout his career. In 1968, he took a leave of absence.

He retired in 1973 and died in February 1987.

In February 2019, Father Hewetson’s name first appeared publicly on the Diocese of Albany’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted multiple allegations, but did not provide any information on the allegations regarding age/gender of the victims.
