Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father John P Kavanaugh:

In 2019, Fr. John P Kavanaugh was named in a lawsuit for sexually abusing a minor. The boy was 7-years-old and was abused for 3 years, from the 4th grade to the 8th grade at St. Finn Barr Catholic School in San Francisco, California.

According to media reports, the boy, who was in 5th grade at the time, allegedly told his teacher who went and reported it to two nuns, but there was no action. The victim said he reported the abuse to the Archdiocese in 2004, but it was not reported to police, and Kavanaugh was kept in ministry.

Very little is known of Kavanaugh’s activities within the church as the Archdiocese has not released all of the information about Kavanaugh’s assignment history, in addition to the years he was assigned to any. Lastly, information about the nature of the alleged sexual abuse is unknown.

Kavanaugh died in 2013.
