Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Jose Luis Urbina:
In 1989, Fr. Jose Luis Urbina was convicted after pleading guilty to the molestation of a young boy when he served at St. Joseph in Sacramento, California. According to media reports, Urbina allegedly sexually abused the boy from the ages of 8-17, once at gunpoint. Right before his sentencing, Urbina fled to his hometown in Mexico. Despite warnings from the Diocese of Sacramento about his behavior, his Bishop in Mexico was not aware that he had been convicted of the crime, and he was not defrocked at that time.
Urbina’s accuser brought a civil suit against the Diocese of Sacramento in 2003. In 2010, a court of appeals affirmed the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by the mother of two boys molested by Urbina against the Diocese of Sacramento due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. Her two sons brought suit against the diocese separately.
Urbina was laicized in 2008. He was found working as a priest in Navojoa, Mexico in 2005 and is presumed to still be there. A warrant for his arrest was renewed in 2019.
Urbina is included on the Diocese of Sacramento 2019 list of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse.
