Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Carl Sutphin:
According to media reports, Father Carl Sutphin is one of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ top 10 most prolific abusers. According to media reports, at least 23 survivors have alleged child sexual abuse by him between approximately 1958 and 1978. Cardinal Mahony reportedly received reports of child sexual abuse by Father Sutphin in 1991 alleging that he abused one boy and possibly two from 1964 through 1970. Another allegation was reported in 1994, accusing the priest of sexually abusing two brothers, ages 10-11, years earlier. He was sent to St. Luke Institute for treatment.
In 2002, the Archdiocese forced Father Sutphin to retire early and permanently removed him from ministry. He was arrested in 2003 on charges of child sexual abuse. The charges were later dropped due to a California Supreme Court ruling. He was laicized in 2005, and has been named in several civil lawsuits. His name appeared on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. In January 2013, his personnel file was released. His current whereabouts are unknown.
