Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Stuart Campbell:

Fr. Stuart Campbell was ordained a priest in 1930, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Los Angeles.  of the Dominican order. He left the order in about 1949, but is referred to again in the Directories as a Dominican from 1978 and on.

According to media reports, in 2003, Fr. Campbell was named in a civil lawsuit accusing him of child sexual abuse from 1956 to 1959 while he worked for the Diocese of Fresno. The details of the sexual abuse allegations, including where the alleged abuse occurred, or the victim’s age/gender, are unknown.

Fr. Campbell died in 1986. His status as a priest, whereabouts, and whether he had access to children from 1984 until his death in 1986 is unknown.

In 2018, Fr. Campbell was named publicly on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ updated list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors and on the Dominicans St. Joseph Province list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted a report in 2010 of incidents from 1956-1959 and 1978-1980. In 2019, his name appeared on the Diocese of Reno and on the Diocese of Las Vegas’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.

Br. Ramon Varela, a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara, was named publicly as accused by the Franciscans’ Santa Barbara Province on its 2019 list Friars that are Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor.

According to this list, a report was made in 1994, alleging that Br. Varela sexually abused minors from 1949 to 1979. Br. Varela died in 2002. His status as a priest and whether he had access to children from 1993 until his death is unknown.

Ordained a Redemptorist priest, Fr. Anthony Slane was accused in a civil lawsuit of sexually abusing a child at St. Alphonsus Liguori in San Leandro, California, in the 1960s. No further details have been released.

Fr. Slane also worked in the Archdiocese of Seattle and has been included on the Archdiocese of Seattle’s List of Clergy and Religious Brothers and Sisters For Whom Allegations of a Minor Have Been Admitted, Establish or Determined to Be Credible. He was also listed on the Oakland Diocese’s list in 2019.

Fr. Slane spent the last six years of his life in St. Clement Health Care Center in Ligouri, MO, and died in 2010 at the age of 94.

According to this report, allegations were made to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2015 that claim Fr. Shepherd sexually abused minors in the 1970s and 1980s. Fr. Shepherd bounced around and was assigned to different Jesuit high schools in CA and AZ. Shepherd died in 1991. He was included on the Jesuits West Province list of Clergy Credibly Accused in 2018.

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Vincent O’Connell:

Fr. Vincent O’Connell was an Irish priest ordained a priest of the Society of Mary. In 2003, after reading a magazine story on priest sexual abuse, a survivor came forward to accuse Fr. O’Connell of child sexual abuse in 1970 while he was working at St. Anthony of Padua in Fresno, California.

The female survivor was 16 years old at the time of the abuse and alleges she reported the rape to a parish deacon and priest in her local diocese. Her father died suddenly, and Fr. O’Connell spent a lot of time with her family before the abuse occurred. After no action was ever taken, but she filed a civil lawsuit against the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 2013. He returned to Ireland, where he lived in a home for retired priests of the Holy Ghost Fathers in Dublin until his death in 1999.

In 2012, the same woman filed a separate suit against the Archdiocese of San Francisco for not doing anything when told of the abuse in 2003.

According to media reports, in 1994, a man filed suit alleging that Br.Jorge Ortiz Lopez molested him in the rectory of Sacred Heart in Prescott, Arizona when he was an altar boy from 1975-1976. The 1992 police report indicated that the victim was intoxicated when he entered Brother Lopez’s room and that Brother Lopez admitted full responsibility for the abuse. He promised to pay for the victim’s counseling but did not. The suit was settled in 1996. Br. Lopez died in 2004.

In May 2019, his name appeared on the Franciscan Friars of Santa Barbara’s list of friars credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor, as well as the Diocese of Oakland’s list in 2019. This list also states that Fr. Lopez moved to Mexico in 1997. Br. Lopez’s whereabouts, status as a brother, and whether he had access to children from 1998 until his death in 2004 are unknown.

Ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, Fr. Cornelius Leehan was accused in a civil lawsuit in 2003 alleging sexual abuse by Fr. Leehan when the plaintiff was a young boy at St. Alphonsus Liguori in San Leandro, California. The victim also alleged that Fr. Leehan sexually abused him seven years later when he was reassigned to the parish.

The survivor said he told his father, who told him to tell no one and to never speak about a priest that way. Fr. Leehan died in 1996. He is named publicly on the Oakland Diocese’s list in 2019 of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor.

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Greg Kareta:

In 1985, Fr. Gregory Kareta, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, allegedly admitted that he sexually abused a child in the 1960s while he was on assignment in Wisconsin, but the Archdiocese of Los Angeles permitted him to remain in ministry.

In 2003, Fr. Kareta was accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy between 1973 and 1974 while at St. Paul the Apostle, Pismo Beach. Three other alleged victims corroborated the charges, but ultimately, they were dropped due to Statute of Limitations.

Fr. Kareta was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Report to the People of God: Clergy Sexual Abuse Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the Religious Order Priests and Brothers section. Fr. Kareta died in 2006. His status as a priest, whereabouts, and whether he had access to children from 2004 until his death is unknown.
