Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Lawrenceville School

Mercer County, New Jersey

Founded: 1810

Location: Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Grades: 9 through 12

Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School was originally known as Mainhead Academy and had several variations of the name thereafter. It is now a coeducational preparatory boarding school for students from 9th to 12th grade. The school averages at about 800 students each year and around 100 classroom teachers.

After multiple allegations of sexual abuse in recent years, in 2018 the Lawrenceville School hired an outside investigative firm to look into the school’s history of alleged abuse. Bruce Presley, who was not only a teacher but also a housemaster at the school, has been the subject of dozens of sexual abuse and harassment complaints during his employment at The Lawrenceville School from 1960 to 1984. One of the most consistent stories of abuse was Presley making students do a series of exercises naked while Presley leered at them. The former students recall this happening as a form of punishment for rules infractions, such as being out past curfew.

Others complained of inappropriate physical touching as well.

Presley, now 79, is believed to be residing in South Florida.

Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Dwight-Englewood School

Bergen County, New Jersey

Founded: 1973

Location: Englewood, New Jersey

Grades: Pre-K through 12

In 1889, the Dwight School for Girls was founded as a college preparatory school for females.  Later, The Englewood School for Boys was established in 1928 for male students. In 1973, the two schools formed a nonprofit corporation known as Dwight-Englewood School. The schools consolidated again in 1993, and now includes students from Pre-K to sixth grade as well. It is home to a population of about 900 students and 100 classroom teachers annually.

In 2014, allegations of a former music teacher at Horace Mann School in The Bronx, New York were brought to light in a lawsuit filed by a former Horace Mann student. The lawsuit accused teacher Johannes Somary of “grooming” and subsequently abusing multiple students in what later became a massive scandal at Horace Mann.  The first victim claimed the sexual abuse occurred over many years, and that some of the incidents took place while the Glee Club was traveling to and performing at the Dwight-Englewood School on multiple occasions.  The lawsuit claims that the schools knew that Somary was a predator for many years and did nothing about it. The case was settled in April of 2015.

Sexual Abuse Allegations at Seton Hall Preparatory School

Essex County, New Jersey

Founded:1856

Location: West Orange, New Jersey

Grades: 9 through 12

Founded in 1865, Seton Preparatory School is the oldest Catholic college prep school in New Jersey. It is an all-boys school that is under the supervision of the Archdiocese of Newark, with its origins on the campus of Seton Hall University. The Prep School now has an average enrollment of about 900 students and almost 80 classroom teachers.

In May 2017, a former member of Sacred Heart Parish who attended Seton Hall Preparatory School sued both institutions and the Archdiocese of Newark. The lawsuit claimed that the school failed to protect him from repeated sexual abuse by two priests in the 1970’s. The lawsuit named Fr. William Giblin as an alleged abuser; at the time he was the headmaster of the school. Giblin has also been charged in Canada in 2002 for soliciting sex from a minor.

Rev. Robert Gibney was the other priest who was named in the lawsuit against Seton Hall Prep.  Gibney also worked at Oratory Prep in Summit.

Records show William Giblin died in 2011.  Gibney died in 2012.

The Delbarton School

New Jersey Private School Abuse

Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Delbarton School

Morris Township, New Jersey

Founded: 1939

Location: Main campus in Morristown, New Jersey

Grades: 7 through 12

Delbarton is an all-male Roman Catholic preparatory school operated by the Benedictine Monks of St. Mary’s Abbey. The school was established in 1939 and in the beginning, it was only home to those in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. In 1942, the school expanded and began educating boys from seventh to twelfth grade. In recent years, its enrollment has averaged at almost 600 students per year.

According to documents filed in Superior Court in Morristown, a former headmaster and several monks (both current and retired) were accused of sexually abusing several boys from 1968 to 1984.   In early June 2018, the Benedictine order settled multiple lawsuits brought by five men who were former students at Delbarton. As of July 2018, almost 30 victims have stepped forward with claims of abuse.

One priest, Timothy Brennan, was accused in three of the settled cases and five more pending complaints. Since then, he has admitted to abusing over 50 boys over the years and that he has been living in a notorious pedophile treatment center in Missouri.

The school’s former headmaster, Luke Travers, had complaints made against him by two brothers who alleged the abuse occurred when Travers was still a teacher at Delbarton. One of the brothers also named Rev. Justin Capato as another abuser at the Delbarton School. The two cases were both settled in March of 2018.

The Pingry School

The Pingry School New Jersey

Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Pingry School

Bernards Township, New Jersey

Founded: 1861

Location: Campuses in Short Hills and Basking Ridge

Grades: K through 12

Originally founded in 1861 as a boys’ school, The Pingry School has been co-educational since the early 1970s.  It is home to a student population that typically numbers about 1100 annually.

In May 2018, The Pingry School announced that it had settled 21 sexual abuse allegations against its former employee, Thad “Ted” Alton.  Alton, who worked as a teacher and a Boy Scout leader, was the subject of 27 allegations of abuse over a six year period in the 1970s. After leaving The Pingry School, Alton moved to upstate New York, where he was arrested for sexually abusing fifty more students in 1989.  He is now a registered sex offender as a result of that conviction.

According to an independent investigation conducted by a third party in 2017, at least two more former teachers had been accused of sexual abuse.  Bruce Bohner was accused of molesting four students, all aged 10 or 11 years old, during the late 1970s. Antoine du Bourg, who taught at the school for 46 years, was accused of molestation and other inappropriate sexual conduct in “multiple instances,” according to the final report.
