Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Russell Gerald Appleby:

In 1994, Fr. Russell Gerald Appleby, a member of the Holy Family Missionaries, was accused of sexually abusing a boy for two years in the 1970s while serving at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs in 1978-1979. A lawsuit was filed in 1996, and Appleby was charged in Texas and in Florida. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and 20 years of sex offender probation. He died in prison in 2005.

Fr. Appleby was laicized in 1995. He is listed on the Corpus Christi Diocese’s 2019 list. It notes removal from ministry in the diocese 1983. The diocese said it notified Appleby’s religious superior of the allegations but learned that he had been removed from the ministry in 1991 and defrocked by the Vatican in 1995.

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Frank A. Sierra:

Fr. Frank A. Sierra was accused by multiple survivors of child sexual abuse while serving at Holy Cross in Santa Cruz, New Mexico, in the 1960s.

In 1970, Fr. Sierra moved to the Diocese of San Diego, where he allegedly continued to abuse children. According to the Diocese of San Diego, Fr. Sierra worked at St. Joseph in Upland from 1970 to 1974, and in 1988, Fr. Sierra retired. Fr. Sierra was accused in a 1994 civil lawsuit of sexually abusing girls in Santa Cruz, NM.

Fr. Sierra was removed from ministry in 2002. Fr. Sierra was included in the Diocese of San Diego’s list of priests where the Diocese has received a credible allegation involving sexual abuse of a minor. He was also included in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe’s list of clergy accused of child sexual abuse. Fr. Sierra’s whereabouts and whether he had access to children from approximately 1994 until his death in 2013 are unknown.

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Luis Martinez:

Two civil suits were filed in New Mexico against Fr. Luis Martinez in 1994, alleging sex abuse to female minors having occurred between 1964-1970 at Holy Cross Parish in Santa Cruz, California. At least one suit (maybe both) settled by Archdiocese of Santa Fe and Sons of the Holy Family in 1995.  Fr. Martinez was included on the Santa Fe Archdiocese list of credibly accused in 2017. Martinez allegedly left the priesthood, but no information has been released on laicization or to what he is presently doing.
