Recent developments in the State of New Jersey, including the Attorney General’s announcement of a comprehensive investigation of sexual abuse allegations against New Jersey clergy, have changed the legal landscape for survivors of sexual abuse by clergy in the Diocese of Camden.  The Attorney General investigation, which is only in its infancy, could very well reveal abuse and cover-up patterns similar to those found in New York and Pennsylvania in their groundbreaking grand jury investigations.

The Diocese of Camden recently filed for Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy protection to resolve all outstanding claims of sexual abuse.

On October 1, 2020, the Diocese of Camden quietly filed for Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy protection, citing the number of sexual abuse lawsuits and claims being filed against it.  The move comes after more than a half-dozen other Dioceses in New York and Pennsylvania have done the same.

It is a common misconception that bankruptcy means that a survivor of sexual abuse has no more recourse for what happened to them.  That is not true.  It means the claim will be decided in a more streamlined process in the federal bankruptcy court.  But a very strict filing deadline will apply once set by the Court; after that date (the “bar date”) the Diocese of Camden will be immune from lawsuits in all but the most limited of circumstances forever.

The Court will soon set the bar date – the date by which all claims of sexual abuse must be filed with the Court or be forever barred – so it is important that you act today to protect your rights.  Contact us today to discuss your options.

Through Our Own Investigation, We Have Identified 72 Catholic Priests Accused of Sexual Misconduct in the Diocese of Camden, and that Number is Expected to Grow.

In February 2019, Bishop Sullivan released the names of 57 men that it said had been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors in the Diocese of Camden.  The Diocese defined the term “credibly accused” itself, and had total control over the investigation into the credibility of the underlying allegations, just as it had exclusive control over the criteria determining which priests were identified on its list.  This makes an independent grand jury investigation that much more important.

Through our our investigative efforts, we have identified a staggering 72 Catholic clergy assigned in the Diocese of Camden who have been publicly accused of sexually misconduct.  We believe it to be the most comprehensive list of accused priests publicly available today. In many cases, the priests listed below were the subject of multiple allegations, or were moved to a new parish after allegations arose.

The accused clergy we have identified are:
